FERTILIZER & WEED CONTROL NEAR YOU

Timing Beats Product Every Time

A bag of fertilizer from a big-box store is not the problem. The problem is that most lawns get fed once in May, never get a pre-emergent, and then get treated for the crabgrass that shows up in June — which is three months too late to stop it. Turf responds to when you apply and how much, and both change with the grass type and the weather that year.
Jhernandez Lawn Service handles lawn fertilization in Carrollton, TX and throughout the DFW metroplex for homeowners, rental property owners, HOAs and businesses. We build a season-long program around your grass and your soil: fertilizer at the right rates, pre-emergent ahead of each weed season, broadleaf control for what is already up, and iron when the blades go pale.
Because we are already on your property mowing, we see the lawn every week rather than four times a year. Thin spots, fungus after a wet spring, grub damage in late summer and irrigation gaps get caught while they are still small, and the next application gets adjusted instead of applied blind.

WHAT THE PROGRAM COVERS

Complete Fertilization & Weed Control in Carrollton, TX

Feeding the grass and controlling the weeds are two different jobs. A lawn needs both, on their own schedules.

Seasonal Fertilization Program

Five to six applications through the year, balanced for your grass and soil. Slow-release nitrogen through the growing season so the lawn thickens steadily instead of surging and crashing.

Pre-Emergent Weed Control

The application that matters most. Put down in late winter and again in early fall to stop crabgrass, poa annua, henbit and annual weed seed before it ever germinates.

Broadleaf & Weed Grass Control

Spot and blanket treatment for dandelion, clover, thistle, spurge, nutsedge and dallisgrass — matched to your turf, because what is safe on bermuda can thin St. Augustine.

Iron & Micronutrients

For the pale, yellow-green look that more nitrogen will not fix. Chelated iron and micronutrients bring the color back on high-pH clay soils without forcing excess top growth.

Soil Testing & Amendment

When a lawn will not respond, we test rather than keep feeding it. pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter, then compost, humate or sulfur to correct what the numbers show.

Grub & Insect Control

Grub preventative timed for early summer, plus treatment for chinch bugs, armyworms and sod webworms — the usual causes of spreading brown patches that watering does not fix.
GRASS TYPES

Every Grass Wants Something Different

The same program applied to every lawn on a street will help some and hurt others. Bermuda wants more nitrogen than St. Augustine and takes herbicides St. Augustine cannot. Fescue is a cool-season grass, so its whole schedule runs opposite the rest. First visit we identify what you actually have — most Carrollton yards are a mix — and set the rates from there.
FULL SUN

Bermuda

The most common turf on newer DFW lots and the hungriest. Fed every six to eight weeks through summer, it fills in aggressively and outgrows most weeds on its own. Tolerates the widest range of herbicides.
Feeding: highest nitrogen, Apr–Sep.
SUN TO PART SHADE

St. Augustine

Standard in established Carrollton, Farmers Branch and Addison neighborhoods with tree cover. Sensitive to several common herbicides and prone to brown patch and chinch bugs, so it gets lighter, more careful applications.
Feeding: moderate, product choice is critical.
SUN TO PART SHADE

Zoysia

Dense, slow growing and increasingly common on newer Flower Mound and Coppell builds. Needs less nitrogen than bermuda, and overfeeding it builds thatch that holds disease.
Feeding: light and steady, never heavy.
SHADE

Fescue

A cool-season grass used in deep shade where nothing warm-season will hold. Its schedule is reversed: fed in fall and early spring, left alone in the heat, and overseeded each fall to stay thick.
Feeding: fall and spring, not summer.
Soil matters as much as grass. Carrollton, Farmers Branch and Addison sit on alkaline blackland clay that ties up iron and drains slowly, so lawns there often look pale despite plenty of nitrogen and need iron more than they need feeding. Sandier ground through parts of Coppell and Lewisville leaches nitrogen faster and does better on lighter, more frequent applications than one heavy one.
WHY IT MATTERS

A Thick Lawn Is the Best Weed Control

Weeds are opportunists. They take the bare ground between thin turf, the compacted strip along the driveway, the shaded edge where the grass gave up. Feed the lawn properly and it closes those gaps itself, which does more over two seasons than any amount of spraying.
Density also makes a lawn tougher when North Texas turns hostile. Deeper roots pull water from further down during a July dry stretch, so the yard holds color longer between irrigation cycles and recovers faster after a hard freeze. Thick turf shades its own soil, which slows evaporation and keeps clay from cracking open.
▸ Even color instead of patchy green and yellow
▸ Crabgrass and annual weeds stopped before they sprout
▸ Deeper roots and better drought tolerance
▸ Bare spots filled in by the grass itself
▸ Faster green-up in spring, later color in fall
▸ Fewer disease and insect problems to chase

HOW IT WORKS

Our Fertilization Process

Five steps. Individual applications take under an hour on most residential lots.

1

Evaluate the Lawn

We identify the grass, measure the turf area, note the weeds that are up, and look at shade, irrigation coverage and how the soil is draining.

2

Build the Program

You get the year laid out: how many applications, roughly when each falls, what goes down and what it costs. Take the whole program or just the applications you want.

3

Apply on Schedule

Calibrated spreaders and even coverage, edges and beds kept clean, and no application ahead of heavy rain or in the middle of a heat spike. Weather moves dates, and we tell you when it does.

4

Leave Instructions

A note on the door every visit: what was applied, the date, when to water and when it is safe for kids and pets to be back on the grass.

5

Watch & Adjust

We check the lawn each mowing visit and adjust the next application to what it is actually doing, rather than running the same schedule regardless of the year.
PROGRAM CALENDAR

A North Texas Fertilization Year

Warm-season lawns in Carrollton run on a predictable cycle. Dates shift a few weeks with the weather each year — soil temperature decides when pre-emergent goes down, not the calendar — but this is the shape of the program for bermuda, St. Augustine and zoysia.
LATE WINTER · FEB–MAR

Pre-Emergent

The single most important application of the year. It has to be down and watered in before soil temperatures hit the mid-fifties, or the crabgrass you will fight all summer has already germinated.
SPRING · APR–MAY

Green-Up Feeding

Once the lawn is fully out of dormancy and mowing has started, the first real feeding goes down with broadleaf control for the henbit, clover and dandelion already up.
SUMMER · JUN–AUG

Feeding & Iron

Slow-release nitrogen with iron to hold color through the heat, plus grub preventative in early summer. Rates come down in the worst of August so we are not pushing growth the roots cannot support.
FALL · SEP–NOV

Pre-Emergent & Winterizer

A second pre-emergent stops poa annua and winter weeds, and a potassium-heavy late feeding builds root reserves so the lawn comes through freezes and greens up earlier next spring.
Fertilizer does not fix a watering or mowing problem. If the irrigation misses a corner, the blade is dull, or the lawn is being cut too short in July, we will say so before selling you another application — the fix is usually free and it works better.
FERTILIZATION PRICING

Priced Per Application. Cheaper By the Season.

Applications are priced by turf area, and we measure the actual grass — not the lot — so you are not paying to treat a driveway. Taking the full-season program costs less per visit than calling for one-off applications, and there is no contract holding you to it.
Add-ons like soil testing, grub preventative and heavy weed recovery on a lawn that has been neglected are quoted separately so you can see exactly what they cost. Properties already on our mowing route get the best rate, because we are on site anyway.

WHAT EVERY QUOTE INCLUDES

▸ Free lawn evaluation and grass identification
▸ Turf area measured, priced in writing
▸ Full-year schedule with products and timing
▸ Even, calibrated application on every visit
▸ Beds, walks and drives blown clean
▸ Watering and reentry instructions left on the door

Jose and his crew did a terrific job with our yard maintenance! This is our first week with them and they did an amazing job. We have an oversized multi-level lot and they were very thorough with the mowing, weed-eating and blowing and cleaned everything up very well. So glad to have them!

GOOD TO KNOW

Lawn Fertilization Questions, Answered

Applications are priced by turf area, and we measure the actual grass rather than the lot, so you are not paying to treat a driveway. Taking the full-season program costs less per visit than calling for one-off applications, and there is no contract holding you to it. Add-ons like soil testing, grub preventative and recovery work on a badly neglected lawn are quoted separately. Estimates are free and written.
Most DFW warm-season lawns do best on five or six applications through the year: a late-winter pre-emergent, a spring green-up feeding with broadleaf control, a summer feeding with iron, a late-summer application, and a fall pre-emergent with a potassium-heavy winterizer. Fescue is the exception — it is a cool-season grass, so it gets fed in fall and early spring and left alone in the heat.
No. Fertilizer feeds the grass, and a thick lawn crowds weeds out over time, but weeds already in the yard need herbicide. Pre-emergent applied in late winter and again in early fall stops crabgrass, poa annua and annual weed seed before it sprouts. Post-emergent products handle broadleaf weeds like dandelion, clover and henbit that are already up.
Keep kids and pets off until granular product has been watered in and any liquid application has fully dried, which is usually a couple of hours in DFW heat. We leave a note on the door with the products applied, the date and the specific reentry timing for that visit.
Granular fertilizer should be watered in within a day or so, about a half inch, to move it into the soil, and pre-emergent needs water to activate the barrier. Liquid weed control is the opposite: it has to stay on the leaf to work, so hold off watering for at least 24 hours after a broadleaf application.
In Carrollton it is usually iron, not nitrogen. Our soil is alkaline blackland clay, and at a high pH the iron is in the ground but the grass cannot take it up, so the blades go pale between the veins. A chelated iron and micronutrient application brings the color back without pushing the excess top growth more nitrogen would. If it does not respond, we run a soil test instead of guessing.
