ABOUT HIGHLAND VILLAGE, TEXAS
The City We Work In
Highland Village sits in Denton County on the east shore of Lake Lewisville, wedged between Lewisville to the south, Flower Mound to the west and Copper Canyon and Corinth to the north. About 16,000 people live in roughly five and a half square miles, in the 75077 zip code.
It incorporated in 1963 and grew as a residential city rather than a commercial one. There is very little industry and no real downtown; what there is instead is neighborhoods, a large parks system and a connected trail network that runs down to the lake at Copperas Branch and Pilot Knoll. Children go to Lewisville ISD schools, and the city’s own facilities sit along Highland Village Road.
The part that matters for lawn care is the tree cover. Highland Village was developed out of the Eastern Cross Timbers, a north-south belt of sandy loam over clay that grows native post oak and blackjack oak, and much of that canopy was left standing. Drive through Highland Shores or the older streets off Briarhill and the shade is the first thing you notice. It is why the city looks the way it does, and it is why turf here behaves differently than turf on an open lot in Carrollton.
Lot sizes vary widely too. Some interior streets are compact, while properties nearer the lake and in parts of Highland Shores run large and irregular, with mature trees, slopes and beds. That is why we measure turf rather than quoting from a lot size.
Jose Hernandez has worked lawns across North Texas for more than 20 years and now maintains over 100 properties. On a Highland Village yard, most of the first walkthrough is spent looking up rather than down.

WHAT WE DO
Lawn Care Services in Highland Village, TX
One crew for the whole property, from the weekly cut to fertilization, trimming and full landscape installs.
Lawn Mowing in Highland Village TX
Weekly or biweekly mowing at the right height for your grass, plus weed-eating, edging along every walk and drive, and hard surfaces blown clean. Shaded turf gets cut higher, not shorter.
Lawn Care Fertilizer Service
Five to six applications a year, timed to soil temperature rather than the calendar, and scheduled against the city’s allowed watering days. Available on its own if you mow your own lawn.
Tree Service in Highland Village TX
Tree and shrub trimming, hedges shaped, crape myrtles pruned properly, and canopies selectively thinned to get light back down to the grass underneath. The most useful service on this side of town.
Leaf Removal
Lawn, beds, fence lines and reachable gutters cleared. With this much oak canopy it is a repeating job through the season rather than one visit in November.
Landscaping Services in Highland Village TX
Bed design and installation, plantings, edging, stone borders and front-yard renovations, priced by the job with a written plant list. Shade beds instead of failing grass is a common ask here.
Yard Cleanup in Highland Village TX
Spring and fall cleanups, overgrown and vacant lots, rental turnovers, bed weeding and re-edging, with everything hauled off.
Sod and Lawn Installation Services
New bermuda, St. Augustine or zoysia laid on properly prepped ground. Under a canopy we will tell you honestly whether sod will hold before we take the job.
Mulch Installation
Beds weeded and re-edged, old crusted mulch broken up, then fresh hardwood, cedar or black mulch at the right depth and kept off the trunks.
Planting Services
Trees, shrubs, flower beds, perennials and seasonal color, with Texas-adapted and shade-tolerant choices and beds amended rather than dug as a hole full of bagged soil.

RECURRING SERVICE
Professional Lawn Maintenance in Highland Village TX, Season by Season
Most customers hand off the whole year rather than booking a single cut: what gets mowed and when, when the lawn gets fed, when the canopy gets thinned, and what happens the week a freeze or a heat run changes the plan.
MAR – MAY
Spring
Cleanup, first cuts, spring feeding, bed re-edging and mulch. Shaded turf greens up later than sunny turf, so the first few cuts here run behind the neighborhood on the open side of town.
JUN – SEP
Summer
Weekly mowing, cut high, sharp blades, clippings left down. Under trees the grass is already competing for light and water, so cutting it short is the fastest way to lose it entirely.
OCT – DEC
Fall
Fall pre-emergent and winterizer, then leaf removal on repeat. Oaks drop over a long window and post oak holds leaves into winter, so this is the busiest stretch of the year in Highland Village.
JAN – FEB
Winter
The right window for structural pruning and canopy thinning, plus cleanups and late-winter pre-emergent timed to soil temperature. Thinning done now shows up as thicker grass in June.
TREATMENT PROGRAM
Lawn Care Fertilizer Service and Weed Control in Highland Village TX
You can book the treatment program on its own. Plenty of Highland Village customers mow their own lawn and only want the part that is easy to get wrong: what goes down, at what rate, and when.
LATE WINTER
Pre-Emergent, Timed
Down and watered in before soil temperatures reach the mid-fifties and hold. Usually late February into early March in Denton County, but it follows the weather, not the calendar. Miss it and you spray all summer.
SPRING & SUMMER
Feeding and Broadleaf Control
Green-up feeding, a summer application with iron, and spot broadleaf control as things come up. Shaded turf gets fed lighter than turf in full sun, because it cannot use as much.
FALL
Second Pre-Emergent
A fall application stops cool-season weeds before they germinate, which is why some lawns come out of winter clean and the one next door comes out full of henbit and poa annua.
THE HONEST PART
Spray Is Not the Whole Answer
Weeds fill gaps, and in Highland Village the gaps are usually made by shade. You can spray every month and still have weeds under a canopy, because nothing is closing the space. Thinning the trees does more than another application.
LOCAL CONDITIONS
Grass Under Highland Village's Oaks
The tree cover that makes this city pleasant to live in is also the single most common reason a lawn here does not look right. Bermuda needs roughly six hours of direct sun a day. Under a mature post oak it gets two or three, and no fertilizer program changes that arithmetic.
Shade is only half of it. A big oak also drains the top several inches of soil, so the grass beneath it is competing for water as well as light, and it drops a leaf load heavy enough to smother whatever survives. Homeowners usually respond by watering and feeding more, which does nothing, because neither one is the constraint.
Let light through: selective canopy thinning and raising the lower limbs puts dappled light back on the ground without changing the look of the tree. Done in winter, it shows up as thicker grass by June. This is the fix that actually works.
Match the grass to the light: St. Augustine and the shade-tolerant zoysias hold on in light that kills bermuda. Where a yard is part sun and part deep shade, one grass across the whole thing is the wrong answer.
Sometimes stop fighting it: in genuine deep shade nothing turf-like will hold, and reseeding the same bare ring every spring is money spent annually on the same failure. A mulched bed or a shade groundcover under that tree is cheaper and looks better.
CITY RULES
Watering Days and the 12-Inch Ordinance
Two city rules affect how a Highland Village yard gets serviced. Neither is complicated, but both are worth knowing before you plan a treatment or leave town for a month.
No watering Monday or Friday
Under the city’s drought regulation phases, all outside water use is prohibited on Monday and Friday to let the system recover. Check the city’s current phase, since the rules tighten and loosen with supply.
Evening and early morning only
Hand watering of landscapes is permitted from 6:00 pm to 10:00 am. That happens to be when watering works best anyway: midday irrigation loses much of itself to evaporation before it reaches the roots.
We schedule around your days
Granular fertilizer and pre-emergent have to be watered in to work at all. We time applications to land ahead of a day you are allowed to water, rather than putting product down and hoping for rain.
Grass capped at 12 inches
Ordinance Section 38-24 requires grass, weeds and uncultivated plants be kept under 12 inches. The city asks for voluntary compliance first and can cite after that. Code Enforcement: (972) 899-5092.
WHY HIGHLAND VILLAGE HOMEOWNERS CALL US
What You Get With a Local Owner-Operator
01
One Person Accountable
Jose quotes the job, works the properties and answers the phone. No call center, no rotating subcontractor, no explaining your yard to someone new every month.
02
Mowing and Tree Work Together
In a city this shaded, the crew that mows the lawn should be the one thinning the canopy above it. We do both, so the diagnosis and the fix come from the same person.
03
Measured, Written Prices
Lots here range from compact to acre-plus, so we measure the actual turf instead of quoting off a lot size. The price is in writing before we start and it holds for the season.
04
Everything From One Crew
Mowing, treatments, trimming, beds, sod and cleanups handled by the same people. Nobody has to coordinate three vendors to get a yard looking right.

GOOD TO KNOW
Highland Village Lawn Care Questions
Mowing is priced by measured turf area and access rather than a flat rate. Highland Village lots vary a lot, from compact interior lots to wooded acre-plus properties, so we measure the actual grass rather than guessing from the lot size. Fertilizer and weed control are priced per application by turf area. Everything is quoted in writing and the mowing price holds for the season. Landscaping, tree work, sod and cleanups are quoted by the job after a free walkthrough.
Highland Village is a small, heavily wooded city of about 16,000 people in Denton County, sitting on the east shore of Lake Lewisville in the 75077 zip code. It was incorporated in 1963 and built out mostly as planned residential neighborhoods rather than commercial development, so it is almost entirely homes, parks and trails across roughly five and a half square miles. There are more than a dozen parks and many miles of connected trail, and the city kept much of its native tree cover when it developed. For lawn care that means shade, leaf load and root competition are the normal conditions here, not the exception.
Highland Village sits in the Eastern Cross Timbers, a belt of sandy loam over clay that grows native post oak and blackjack oak. The city preserved a lot of that canopy, which is why the neighborhoods look the way they do, and it is also why bermuda struggles here. Bermuda needs roughly six hours of direct sun and will thin out below that no matter how it is fed. Under a mature oak you are choosing between shade-tolerant turf, selective canopy thinning to let light through, or a bed or groundcover instead of grass. More fertilizer is not one of the options.
Yes. Under Highland Village’s drought regulation phases, all outside watering is prohibited on Monday and Friday, and hand watering is limited to the hours between 6:00 pm and 10:00 am. That matters for treatments, because granular fertilizer and pre-emergent need to be watered in to work. We schedule applications against your allowed days rather than dropping product and hoping for rain. Check the city’s current phase before you plan any watering, since the rules change with supply conditions.

Just outside the city we also serve Lewisville, Flower Mound, Corinth, Coppell, Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Grapevine, Colleyville, Addison and Plano.
City Ordinance Section 38-24 requires that grass, weeds and uncultivated plants be kept no taller than 12 inches. The city’s stated policy is to ask for voluntary compliance first, but citations can be issued if the property is not brought into compliance in a reasonable time. Code Enforcement can be reached at (972) 899-5092. Anyone on a regular mowing schedule is nowhere near the limit; the ordinance mostly matters for vacant lots, rental turnovers and properties whose owners are out of town.
Late winter, before soil temperatures reach the mid-fifties and hold there. That is usually late February into early March in Denton County, but it moves with the weather and not the calendar. Miss the window and you spend the whole summer spraying crabgrass that one timed application would have prevented. A second pre-emergent goes down in fall for cool-season weeds like henbit and poa annua.
Yes. Plenty of Highland Village customers mow their own lawn and only want the treatment program handled properly. Fertilizer and weed control can be booked on its own without mowing service, on a five or six application schedule across the year.
Yes, and in Highland Village it is a repeat job rather than a single visit. Mature oaks drop over a long window, and post oak holds its leaves well into winter, so one cleanup in November leaves you with another blanket in December. Most customers here put leaf removal on a repeating schedule through the season instead of booking it once.
Both, and there is no contract either way. Most customers are on weekly or biweekly mowing, but one-time yard cleanups, trimming visits, single fertilizer applications and installs are all available on their own.
Jose Hernandez and his own crew. He quotes the work himself, is on the properties, and is who you call or text with a question. No call center, no rotating subcontractor, and no explaining your yard to somebody new every month.
