PLANTING NEAR YOU

Plants That Live Here, Planted to Last

Most plants that die in North Texas yards were never going to make it. They were the wrong species for alkaline clay, planted in the wrong amount of sun, set too deep in a hole the width of the pot, and then watered on a lawn schedule. Planting is the one job where the decisions made in the first hour determine what the yard looks like in five years.
Jhernandez Lawn Service provides planting services in Carrollton, TX and throughout the DFW metroplex for homeowners, rental property owners, HOAs and businesses. We plant trees and shrubs, design and install flower beds, rotate seasonal color, add perennials and ornamental grasses, and replace plants that have died or outgrown their spot.
We buy from local wholesale growers, so the stock is already acclimated to this heat and this soil. Before anything goes in the ground you get a written plant list with sizes, spacing and mature dimensions, so you know what the bed will look like when it fills in — not just on installation day.

WHAT WE INSTALL

Complete Planting Services in Carrollton, TX

Sourcing, bed prep, planting, mulch and cleanup. One crew, one price, one walkthrough at the end.

Tree Planting

Shade and ornamental trees sized to the lot and set at the right depth in a wide, saucered hole. Staked when the wind calls for it, mulched off the trunk, and watered deep on a schedule we write out for you.

Shrub & Hedge Planting

Foundation shrubs, privacy hedges and screening rows spaced for their mature width, not for how they look the day they go in — so you are not pulling every other plant out in three years.

Flower Bed Design & Installation

New beds cut in and shaped, sod and roots removed, soil amended, edging set, plants laid out in layers by height, then mulched. Existing beds can be gutted and replanted the same way.

Seasonal Color Rotation

Annuals changed out twice or three times a year — pansies and violas for winter, petunias and begonias for spring, vinca, lantana and purslane for the summer heat, mums for fall.

Perennials & Ornamental Grasses

The low-water backbone of a Texas bed: salvia, lantana, autumn sage, daylily, coneflower, muhly and Mexican feather grass. Planted once, cut back each winter, back every spring.

Transplanting & Plant Replacement

Plants moved to a spot that suits them, dead or declining material pulled and replaced, and gaps in an established bed filled with matching stock so the row still reads as one planting.
WHAT WE PLANT

A Plant List Built for North Texas

Carrollton, Farmers Branch and Addison sit on blackland clay: alkaline, slow to drain, and prone to cracking open in August. Parts of Coppell, Lewisville and Flower Mound run sandier. Mature neighborhoods have deep shade under old oaks and elms, while newer lots in The Colony and Corinth are full sun with almost no canopy. What we recommend depends on which of those you have, and every plant on the list below has already proven it can take this soil and this heat.
FULL SUN

Sun Beds & Open Lots

Crape myrtle, vitex, desert willow, dwarf yaupon holly, Texas sage, rosemary, lantana, autumn sage, salvia, muhly and Mexican feather grass. Everything here shrugs off six hours of west sun.
Best for: newer lots with no canopy.
SHADE

Under Mature Trees

Holly fern, cast iron plant, liriope, mondo grass, oakleaf hydrangea, Japanese maple, hosta and turk’s cap. Shade beds are where most homeowners plant sun plants and then wonder why nothing blooms.
Best for: older Carrollton and Coppell lots.
STRUCTURE

Trees & Screening

Live oak, cedar elm, chinquapin oak, bur oak and Chinese pistache for shade; redbud, Mexican plum and yaupon for ornamentals; nellie stevens holly, wax myrtle and eastern red cedar for privacy screens.
Best for: shade, screening, long-term value.
SEASONAL

Annual Color

Pansies, violas, snapdragons and kale for winter; petunias, begonias and marigolds for spring; vinca, purslane, angelonia and lantana for the worst of summer; mums and ornamental kale for fall.
Best for: entries, mailboxes, pots, storefronts.
One note on the soil: in blackland clay we dig the hole two to three times as wide as the root ball but no deeper than it, so the plant does not settle below grade and sit in water. Beds get compost and expanded shale worked in, not a hole full of potting soil, which only creates a bathtub the roots refuse to leave. If you want acid-loving plants like azaleas or gardenias, we build a raised amended bed for them rather than fight the native soil.
WHY IT MATTERS

What Good Planting Gets You

Plants are the only part of a landscape that gets better every year. Hardscape wears, mulch breaks down, paint fades — a tree planted well in a Carrollton front yard is worth more each season, and a bed that was laid out for mature size fills in instead of crowding itself out.
There is a practical side too. A shade tree on the west side of the house cuts the afternoon load on your AC. Beds planted with established perennials and grasses need a fraction of the water annuals do. Shrubs at the foundation shade the slab and keep soil moisture more even, which matters on clay that shrinks and swells. And plants correctly spaced are far less work to trim.
▸ Curb appeal that improves every year instead of fading
▸ Shade where it lowers cooling costs
▸ Lower water use with the right species
▸ Screening for patios, pool equipment and property lines
▸ Blooms and color through most of the year
▸ Beds that fill in rather than needing replanting

HOW IT WORKS

Our Planting Process

Five steps. Most residential planting jobs are sourced, installed and cleaned up within a week of approval.

1

Walk the Property

We look at sun and shade through the day, how water moves off the lot, the soil, and how the house reads from the street. You tell us what you want the space to do.

2

Plant List & Price

You get a written list: species, container sizes, quantities, spacing and mature dimensions, with the plant material and the labor priced separately. Nothing is bought until you approve it.

3

Prep the Beds

Sod, roots and old plants removed, edges cut clean, compost and expanded shale worked into the clay, and grade set so water runs away from the house instead of standing in the bed.

4

Lay Out & Plant

Everything is set in place in its pot first so you can see the layout and move it. Then it goes in: wide holes, root balls loosened, crowns at grade, backfilled, mulched and watered in deep.

5

Cleanup & Watering Plan

Spoil and pots hauled off, walks and drives blown clean, and a written watering schedule for the first ninety days. We check back after the first couple of weeks.
WHEN TO PLANT

A North Texas Planting Calendar

Almost everything can be planted from a container any month of the year here. Whether it lives is a different question, and that comes down to how many mild weeks the roots get before the first 100-degree stretch. This is roughly how the year runs in Carrollton.
FALL · OCT–DEC

The Best Window

The best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials in DFW. Soil is still warm, air is cool, and roots get five or six months to establish before summer asks anything of them.
LATE WINTER · FEB–MAR

Second Window

Trees, shrubs and grasses go in well once hard freezes are behind us. Nursery stock is at its best selection of the year, and spring rain does much of the watering for you.
SPRING · APR–MAY

Color & Perennials

Warm-season annuals, perennials and tropicals. Still fine for shrubs if you can water consistently. This is when most beds get their spring color changeout.
SUMMER · JUN–SEP

Heat-Tough Only

Vinca, purslane, lantana and other heat lovers do fine. We will plant trees and shrubs in July if you need it, but only with a hand-watering commitment — otherwise we would rather book you for fall.
Watering is what makes or breaks a new planting, and it is not the same as watering a lawn. New trees and shrubs want a slow, deep soak at the root ball two or three times a week for the first month, then tapering off through the first year — not a few minutes of spray every day. We write the schedule down and leave it with you, and if you are on a recurring mowing route we keep an eye on the new plants while we are there.
PLANTING PRICING

Quoted By the Job. Plants Priced Line by Line.

Planting is priced after we see the space. The plant material is usually the biggest piece of the number, and container size drives it — a three-gallon shrub and a thirty-gallon tree are different jobs before anyone picks up a shovel. Then comes bed prep, which is where clay costs money: removing sod and roots, amending the soil, and hauling the spoil off. Mulch and cleanup are included.
You see the plant list and the labor as separate lines, so if the number comes back higher than you expected, we can adjust sizes or phase the beds instead of guessing. Properties on recurring mowing get seasonal color rotations at a better rate than one-off calls.

WHAT EVERY QUOTE INCLUDES

▸ Free on-site walkthrough and layout
▸ Written plant list with sizes and spacing
▸ Sourcing from local wholesale growers
▸ Bed prep, soil amendment and edging
▸ Mulch, initial deep watering and cleanup
▸ Written 90-day watering schedule
Ask about pairing planting with a mulch refresh — the beds are already open.

Jose and his crew did a terrific job with our yard maintenance! This is our first week with them and they did an amazing job. We have an oversized multi-level lot and they were very thorough with the mowing, weed-eating and blowing and cleaned everything up very well. So glad to have them!

Planting Services Across the DFW Metroplex

Based in Carrollton, Texas, Jhernandez Lawn Service plants throughout the north and mid-cities corridor. We know what the soil does in each of these towns: the heavy blackland clay through Carrollton, Farmers Branch and Addison that needs real amendment before anything goes in, the deep shade under mature oaks in older Coppell and Plano neighborhoods, and the exposed full-sun lots with thin builder topsoil in Lewisville, The Colony and Corinth where drought-tough species earn their keep.
GOOD TO KNOW

Planting Services Questions, Answered

Planting is quoted by the job after we look at the property. The plant material itself is usually the biggest part of the number, and container size drives it — a three-gallon shrub and a thirty-gallon tree are different jobs before anyone picks up a shovel. Then comes bed prep, soil amendment, mulch and labor. A tray of seasonal color in an existing bed is a short visit; a new bed dug out of blackland clay and planted with fifteen-gallon shrubs and a tree is a bigger one. Estimates are free and written, with the plant list priced out line by line.
Fall is the best planting season in DFW. October through December gives roots five or six cool, damp months to establish before summer asks anything of them. Late winter and early spring, once hard freezes are past, are the second window. We avoid planting trees and shrubs in July and August unless you can commit to hand watering, because that is when new plants fail.
We stand behind our installation, and we buy from local wholesale growers who supply plants already proven in North Texas soil and heat. Whether a plant survives depends heavily on watering after we leave, so we give you a written schedule for the first ninety days and check back after the first couple of weeks. If something we planted fails early and the watering was followed, we make it right.
Yes, with the right prep and the right plant list. Blackland clay is alkaline and drains slowly, so we dig two to three times as wide as the root ball but no deeper, keep the crown at grade so the plant does not settle into standing water, work compost and expanded shale into the bed, and choose species that tolerate alkaline clay. Acid-loving plants like azaleas and gardenias need a raised amended bed to do well here.
Either way works. Most customers have us source everything, because we buy from local wholesale growers and can pick healthier stock than what is left on a retail lot in July. If you have already bought plants, or have specific varieties in mind, we will happily install what you have.
No plan needed. We walk the property, look at sun and shade through the day, drainage, the soil and how the house reads from the street, then lay out a plant list with species, sizes, spacing and mature dimensions. Everything gets set in place in its pot first so you can see the layout and move things before anything goes in the ground.
