SOD INSTALLATION NEAR YOU
New Sod, Installed the Right Way
Some lawns can be saved with fertilization, watering and time. Others are past that point. When more than half the yard is bare dirt, weeds, dead St. Augustine or hard-packed clay that nothing will grow in, new sod is the fastest way to get a green lawn back, and it works in days rather than seasons.
Jhernandez Lawn Service handles sod installation in Carrollton, TX and throughout the DFW metroplex for homeowners, rental property owners, builders and businesses. We remove the old turf, correct the grade, prep and amend the soil, then lay fresh sod tight, seam to seam, and roll it in so it makes contact with the ground it has to root into.
Most sod failures in North Texas are not the sod’s fault. They come from grass laid over old turf, low spots that hold water, soil that was never broken up, or a watering schedule nobody explained to the homeowner. We handle the first three and walk you through the fourth before we leave the property.

WHAT EVERY INSTALL INCLUDES
Complete Sod Installation Services in Carrollton, TX
Sod is the easy part. What happens underneath it decides whether the lawn is still there next summer, so every install includes the prep work, not just the delivery.
Full Yard Sod Replacement
Front yard, back yard or the whole property. Old turf out, grade corrected, fresh sod laid tight and rolled in the same visit where the size allows.
Bare Spot & Partial Repair
Dead patches under trees, worn paths, dog damage and areas the sprinklers never reached, cut in and matched to the surrounding grass.
New Construction Sod
Builder lots and additions where the yard is bare dirt. We clear construction debris, bring in topsoil, establish drainage away from the slab and sod it out.
Grading & Soil Prep
Low spots filled, high spots cut down, clay broken up and topsoil worked in so roots have something to move into instead of hitting a hard pan.
Old Turf Removal & Haul-Off
Dead grass, weeds, rock and construction debris cut out and taken away. Nothing gets buried under the new lawn and nothing is left at the curb.
Watering & Follow-Up Plan
A written watering schedule for weeks one through four, a check on sprinkler coverage before we start, and a call back to see how it rooted.
CHOOSING THE GRASS
Which Sod Is Right for Your Carrollton Yard?
The single biggest decision in a sod project is the variety, and the answer comes down to sunlight. Older Carrollton, Farmers Branch and Addison neighborhoods have mature trees that throw heavy shade, while newer developments in Lewisville and Flower Mound are wide open to full sun. Before we quote, we look at sun exposure, drainage and how much traffic the lawn takes.
FULL SUN
Bermuda
The workhorse of North Texas lawns. Bermuda needs six or more hours of direct sun, roots fast in warm soil, recovers quickly from traffic and handles a Texas August better than anything else. It is also the most affordable sod per pallet, which makes it the usual choice for full front and back yards.
Best for: open yards, kids and pets, budget-conscious full replacements.
SUN TO PART SHADE
Zoysia
A dense, fine-bladed grass that tolerates four to six hours of sun and crowds out weeds better than the alternatives. Zoysia grows more slowly, so it needs less mowing once established, and it holds color later into the fall. It costs more up front and takes a little longer to knit down.
Best for: mixed sun and shade, homeowners who want a manicured look.
SHADE
St. Augustine
The best option for shaded yards under mature trees, which describes a large share of established Carrollton and Coppell neighborhoods. Broad blades, thick coverage and good shade tolerance, though it needs more water than Bermuda and is more sensitive to hard freezes and chinch bugs.
Best for: heavy tree cover, north-facing yards, replacing existing St. Augustine.
If you are not sure which one your yard needs, that is what the free visit is for. We will tell you plainly when a shaded area will not hold any grass at all.
WHY IT MATTERS
Benefits of Professional Sod Installation
Sod is the only way to go from bare dirt to a finished lawn in a single day. Seed can take a full season in North Texas, and in that time summer heat, hard rain and weed pressure work against you.
It also solves problems that go beyond appearance. Grass holds soil in place on slopes, cools the area around the house, and gives water somewhere to go besides the foundation.
▸ An instant, finished lawn instead of a season of seeding
▸ Dense turf that crowds out crabgrass and weeds
▸ Erosion control on slopes and along drives
▸ Grading that moves water away from the foundation
▸ Cooler yard and less dust and mud tracked inside
▸ Immediate curb appeal for a sale, lease or HOA notice
HOW IT WORKS
Our Sod Installation Process
Five steps. Most residential yards are removed, prepped and sodded in one to two days.
1
Measure & Quote
We measure the area, check sun exposure and drainage, and recommend a variety. You get a written price covering sod, prep, labor and haul-off.
2
Remove the Old Lawn
Existing turf, weeds and debris are cut out and hauled off. We never lay sod on top of old grass.
3
Grade & Prep the Soil
Clay gets broken up, topsoil worked in, low spots filled and the surface graded to fall away from the house.
4
Lay & Roll the Sod
Fresh-cut sod goes down the same day it is delivered, seams staggered and butted tight, then rolled for soil contact.
5
First Soak & Walkthrough
We water it in deeply before leaving, blow the site clean, and go over the watering schedule and first mow with you.
AFTER THE INSTALL
How to Water New Sod in North Texas
New sod lives or dies on water in the first three weeks. Fresh-cut sod arrives with its roots severed, and until they grow back into the soil the grass can only drink what is in the pad. In a Carrollton summer that dries out in hours. Here is the schedule we give every customer.
WEEK 1
Twice a Day
Morning and late afternoon, 15 to 20 minutes per zone. The soil under the sod should stay damp, not soaked. Keep foot traffic, mowers and pets off it.
WEEK 2
Once a Day
One longer morning cycle. Roots are reaching down now, so you want deeper water less often. Lift a corner — resistance means it is knitting in.
WEEK 3
Every Other Day
Take the first mow at the end of this week, blades sharp and the deck set high. Never cut more than a third of the blade off a new lawn.
WEEK 4+
Deep Soak, 2–3× Weekly
Settle into a normal North Texas schedule: about an inch of water a week, early morning, plus a starter fertilizer around week four to six.
Watch for gaps opening at the seams, corners curling up, or a gray-green cast — all three mean the sod is drying faster than it is drinking, and all are fixable if caught early. Call us if you see any of it.
SOD INSTALLATION PRICING
Priced By the Square Foot. No Surprises.
Sod installation is quoted per square foot, and the number moves with the variety you choose, how much old turf has to come out, and whether the yard needs grading. Bermuda is the most economical option; Zoysia and St. Augustine cost more per pallet. We measure the yard, price it once, in writing.
WHAT EVERY QUOTE INCLUDES
▸ Free on-site measurement and sod recommendation
▸ Old turf removal and debris haul-off
▸ Grading, soil amendment and topsoil as needed
▸ Fresh-cut sod, laid tight and rolled in
▸ First deep watering and site cleanup
▸ Written watering plan and a follow-up call
Ask about pairing a sod install with recurring mowing so the first cuts are done right.

GOOD TO KNOW
Sod Installation Questions, Answered
Sod installation is priced per square foot. The number depends on the variety you choose, how much old turf has to be removed, whether the yard needs grading or trucked-in topsoil, and how easy the area is to reach with equipment. Bermuda is the most economical; Zoysia and St. Augustine cost more per pallet. We measure the yard and give you one written price that covers sod, prep, labor and haul-off, and the estimate is free.
It comes down to sunlight. Bermuda is the best choice for full-sun Carrollton yards and takes heat and traffic well. Zoysia handles four to six hours of sun and forms a dense, fine-bladed lawn with less mowing. St. Augustine is the go-to under mature trees in older Carrollton, Coppell and Addison neighborhoods.
Spring through early fall is ideal, because warm soil lets roots knit into the ground in two to three weeks. Summer installs work fine with heavier watering, and dormant sod can be laid in winter, though it will not root until the soil warms back up.
Most sod knits down within two to three weeks in the growing season. Stay off it as much as you can for the first two weeks, then take the first mow around week three, once a gentle tug on a corner meets resistance.
Twice a day for the first week, once a day in week two, every other day in week three, then settle into a deep soak two or three times a week. Early morning is best.
Yes. Existing turf, weeds and debris are cut out and hauled off, then low spots get filled and the surface graded before any sod goes down. Laying sod over old grass is the most common reason a new lawn fails.
